In response to international carbon reduction and 2050 net zero goals, Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (TAISE) works with 26 domestic enterprises to prepare and establish the Association of Taiwan Net Zero Emissions (ATNZE). The Association is intended to take initiative in net zero actions, jointly seek for approaches to meet the goals, and assist the government with driving Taiwan in the accomplishment of carbon-neutral goals.
To help members meet the goal of net zero emissions, ATNZE sets up six major committees, including international collaboration, technological service, policies and regulations, sustainable finance, net zero education, and member publications. The knowledge, technology, green finance, and international exchange and collaboration in carbon credit resources related to net zero emissions establish the communication platform for policies between the government and enterprises.
For specific issues, ATNZE has exchanged ideas with government agencies including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Environmental Protection Administration, Financial Supervisory Commission, and Legislative Yuan, after the foundation of ATNZE, to discuss a draft Climate Change Bill and the pathway to net zero emissions – carbon credit and carbon pricing.
ATNZE has recently co-sponsored the Taiwan Net Zero Policy and Action forums with Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (TAISE), inviting four major think tanks from Taiwan, including the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, Chung-Hua Institution Economic Research, Taiwan Research Institute, and Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Taiwan in 2022 Net Zero Action. Academia Sinica President James C. Liao and ITRI President Edwin Liu were also invited to share the opportunities and challenges in the technology of net zero emissions.
Moreover, multiple seminars with the industries have been held, including the promotion of Taiwan CCSU required policies and regulations, cement and steelmaking circular economy and net zero emissions, and the meaning and execution approach of using carbon credit certificates to phase out the old scooter and purchase a new electric scooter.
On March 30 this year, the National Development Council declared “Taiwan's 2050 Net-Zero Emission Path and Strategies” to speed up Taiwan’s transformation in net zero goals through four transformation dimensions, namely energy, industry, life, and society, and two governance basis including technology R&D and climate law. ATNZE collaborates with enterprise members to discuss the responses by holding exclusive core courses and exchanging opinions with Foxconn early this year. ATNZE also plans to visit many other members of financial industries later.
To expand members and social services, ATNZE becomes the communication channel between the government, enterprises and the public to promote regulation amendment, and formulate the specific and feasible practices of explicit net zero pathway. ATNZE also plans to call the net-zero mark presentation ceremony on June 14 this year and will hold the Asia Pacific Forum for Sustainability between August 12 and 14 to share the execution outcome.
